Measurement of the Gluon Fragmentation Function in

The longitudinal, transverse and asymmetric components of the fragmentation function are measured from the inclusive hadrons produced in e + e ? collisions at LEP. As in the deep inelastic scattering, this provides important tests of QCD predictions. Using the lifetime tag procedure it is possible to select Z 0 ! bb events and to compare the fragmentation functions in bb and light quarks events. The measured transverse and longitudinal components of the fragmentation function allow the gluon fragmentation function Dg to be extracted.

I present recent results from LEP which utilize differences between gluon and quark jets to make quantitative tests of QCD. The principal topic is a determination of the ratio of QCD color factors, CA/CF, using either the multiplicity or fragmentation functions of the jets.
